Birgit Skiold: A famous Swedish printmaker,
painter and photographer, Birgit Skiold played a leading role in the development
of British printmaking during the 1950's decade through to the 1980's.
She was the founder of one of the first printmaking workshops in Britain
(1958) and also a founding member of the Printmakers Council (1965). In
these capacities she taught and became a primary influence upon many of
England's leading artists of today. |
|
During her distinguished career Birgit Skiold's
art was the subject of exhibitions around the world. Exhibitions of her
fine etchings took place at the University of Wisconsin (1964), the Oxford
Gallery, Oxford, England (1971), the Wellington Academy, New Zealand (1972),
Musee d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva, Switzerland (1974), Galleria Grafica,
Tokyo (1975), the Arts Council of Great Britain (1978), Norske Internationale
Grafikk Biennale, Norway (1974, 1976 & 1980), Grafiktriennalen, Stockholm
(1974 & 1980), and major retrospectives of her art took place in England
in 1984, 1999 and 2002. Her fine etchings are now included in many major
public collections in Britain, Europe and the United States. |
|
Ocean Water II is indicative of Birgit
Skiold's great etching techniques. Using deep etching, blind printing
and embossing she has here created a masterwork of abstract simplicity
and clarity. |
Provenance: |
From the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing
his inventory number, 'T-899', on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established
the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also
opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only
his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important
exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American
and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni, Birgit
Skiold and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts
community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Their
original prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery
until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death. |

Printed upon a heavy, pure rag paper and with
wide, deckled margins. Skiold not only printed her own etchings but (being
also a noted paper maker) most often made the paper herself. This is probably
the case with this impression of Ocean Water II. A finely printed
impression (no doubt, printed by Skiold) and in excellent condition throughout.
Signed, titled, dated and numbered, '17/25', by the artist in pencil along
the lower margin. Ocean Water II is a superb, original example
of the famous art of Birgit Skiold. |
