Joseph Simpson: A famous British painter, etcher and illustrator, Joseph Simpson studied at the Glasgow School of Art and exhibited throughout his career with the Royal Scottish Academy and with the Royal Society of Watercolour Painters. In 1918 he was commissioned as the official war artist for the R.A.F. and was stationed in France. After the war, Simpson's art was exhibited abroad in Munich, Venice, Florence and Stockholm.
As an original etcher, Joseph Simpson was a master of portraits, figure studies and sporting subjects. His bold and vigorous method of etching, combined with strong diagonal shadings made his art distinct amongst British etchers. English critics, in fact, compared his etchings to those of the great Swedish master, Anders Zorn!
Simpson created slightly over fifty original etchings during his life and of these critics are generally in accord that he created two great master pieces: his depiction of his close friend and fellow etcher, Frank Brangwyn, and his portrait of the artist, James Pryde (1966 - 1941). Published in London in 1924 in a signed edition of 150, James Pryde is a powerful study of character and expression. After seeing this original impression it is no wonder that James Pryde is held to be one of the finest etchings of the early twentieth century. The British Museum in London has almost twenty of Simpson's original etchings in its permanent collection.
