Gretchen Dow Simpson: If the style of this finely
crafted architectural rendering looks somewhat familiar it is because
over sixty-five Gretchen Dow Simpson works of art have been used as the
covers for The New Yorker Magazine. Educated at the Rhode Island
School of Design, Simpson began her career firstly as a photographer.
Intrigued by the effects of man-made structures she began to practice
painting and printmaking around 1970. Since then, she has been successful
in the fields of book illustration, commercial art, and frequently exhibited
landscapes, still lifes and architectural studies. |
|
First gaining national recognition for her close-up views
of New England architecture, Simpson then traveled and worked in Europe,
Morocco and Mexico. As one can see from this original lithograph, the
spacial relationships affected by sunlight and shadow became one of her
primary concerns. Today, Simpson's art is included in such major collections
as Time Inc., Reader's Digest Corporation, Manufacturer's Hanover, the
Newport Art Museum, Rhode Island, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
New York. |
