Note: |
The brothers Charles and Louis Simoneau were highly regarded
engravers in France during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
Charles Simoneau studied engraving techniques under Noel Coypel and Guillaume Chasteau.
His first plates were executed in pure engraving, but later he mixed etching
with engraving to great success. He is best known for his historical depictions,
portraits and vignettes. Charles Simoneau was elected a full member of the
Royal Academy in 1710. The engraving and etching in the upper right corner
-- “Fames Pietate Principis ...” - is by his hand. |
|
The remaining three engravings, including the decorative border,
were created by Charles’s younger brother, Louis Simoneau, also known as (Ludovicus Simoneau).
Louis Simoneau received most of his training from his elder brother and
gained his reputation for his engravings of mythological, religious and
decorative subjects after such artists as Le Brun and de Champagne. Both
brothers worked their entire careers in Paris. |

This interesting grouping of engravings deals specifically
with the famine of Paris which took place in 1662. Given the dates of the
artists and the style of the engraving, it’s likely to assume that
this was a commemorative piece for the fiftieth anniversary of the famine,
which would place that date of the engravings at 1712. However, it’s
possible that La Distribution du Bled (The Distribution of Wheat)
was created for the twenty-fifth anniversary, which would move the date back
to 1687. In either case, these fine engravings commemorate the charity of King Louis X1V
-- a virtue that is not associated with a great many French kings. |
