Gustave Simonau’s original lithograph, Eglise de St. Riquier, Picardie bears the date of 1839 within the stone. From 1838 to 1844 Gustave Simonau created large, architectural lithographs for a set published by Pierre Simonau under the title, "Monuments Gothiques". "Eglise de St. Riquier" hails from this important series. The French town of St. Riquier is situated about five miles northeast of Abbeville. The church, built mostly in the 15th century is famous for its gothic characteristics. Of note are its richly sculpted figures of saints and angels, the square tower and its strongly vertical proportions. The local stone from which the church of St. Riquier was constructed is a white as chalk, lending a superb coloration to the entire edifice. |

Note: | Gustave Adolphe Simonau 'Gustave Simonau': One of Europe's most noteworthy nineteenth century architectural artists, Gustave Simonau came from a family with obvious artistic gifts. His boyhood was spent mainly in London where he studied painting under his uncle, Francois Simonau (1783-1859), and lithographic techniques under his father, Pierre Simonau. From approximately 1815 to 1830, the father owned and ran a successful lithographic printing establishment in London. After that date he returned to Brussels and published many important lithographs, including those created by his son, Gustave Adolphe Simonau. |
Gustave Simonau's early art was mainly in the field of watercolours, most depicting town and topographical views. These were exhibited extensively throughout both England and Belgium. By 1850, Gustave Adolphe Simonau had established himself permanently in Brussels and continued to create fine architectural paintings and watercolours.
Beyond any doubt Gustave Simonau's most impressive architectural art was in the medium of lithography, particularly the very large examples he contributed to the set published by his father and completed in 1844 under the title, "Monuments Gothiques". This original lithograph entitled, "Eglise de St. Riquier, Picardie" (Church of St. Riquier, Picardy) hails from this series. For a six year period (1838-1844), Gustave Simonau traveled throughout France and Belgium delineating some of the greatest achievements of gothic architecture. Altogether he created over forty masterpieces of architectural art on this grand scale.
