Note: |
Melvin Frank Silverman 'Mel Silverman': Although his life was regrettably
brief, Mel Silverman is one of America's most respected artists of the
late 1950's and early 1960's. Equally accomplished as an original printmaker,
painter, illustrator and writer, Mel Silverman received his Bachelor of Fine
Arts and his B.A.E. from the Art Institute of Chicago. The Institute then
awarded him a Fellowship in 1955 which enabled him to work and travel
in Europe for a period of one year. Citadel may perhaps be a remembrance
of Silverman's European travels. |
|
The first one man exhibition of Mel Silverman's art was held
in New York in 1956. During the following ten years he also exhibited
extensively in Chicago, Denver and elsewhere. Today, Silverman's original
woodcuts and paintings are included in the permanent collections of the
Philadelphia Museum of Art, the University of Minnesota, the Butler Institute
of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Frederick R. Weisman
Art Museum, Minneapolis and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. |
|
Citadel was commissioned by the Associated American
Artists of New York in 1963 and published by them in a sole, limited edition
of 140 impressions. Since its inauguration in the mid 1930's the Associated
American Artists commissioned original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts
from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton and Reginald
Marsh. It published graphic art of no less stature during the 1960's decade
as contributing artists included Mel Silverman, Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman,
Joseph Margulies, James Kearns and Sidney Chafetz. |
|
Before the published edition of Citadel, Silverman
printed two Artist Proof impressions. One impression was printed with
a pale green colour block while the other employed a darker tone. The
artist eventually decided upon the pale green tone one sees here in this
original impression from the published edition. |
