David Silverberg: A contemporary Canadian artist
with a strong international reputation, David Silverberg first studied
art at the School of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, under Arthur Lismer.
He then went to Paris to further his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
At this time, David Silverberg became interested in the artistic possibilities
of original printmaking and thus went to New York to study techniques
under Stanley William Hayter at the famous Atelier 17. Silverberg then
traveled and worked extensively in both Europe and in Russia, eventually
accepting a position at the Institute of Decorative Arts and Architecture,
in Grenoble. |
|
In 1963, David Silverberg became Professor of Graphic Arts
at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick. During the following
decades his innovative etchings and aquatints have received numerous awards
both in Canada and throughout the world. Colour printmaking was largely
inspired by a 1967 Canada Council Grant in which Silverberg lived and
worked in Kyoto, Japan, for a period of one year. While there, he extensively
studied the works of the great Japanese printmakers of the past and present.
The result is seen in a splendid way in this original etching where skillful
patterns of colour are brought forth. There is no doubt that David Silverberg
is one of Canada's greatest contemporary masters of the complex medium
of colour etching. |

J'Aime le Son de Cors is undoubtedly one of David
Silverberg's finest works of original art. The subject, of course, is
his lover, depicted with rich floral emblems and the musical instrument
of her profession. It is a fascinating portrayal of etched line and aquatinted
colour and texture -- each strongly evoking the emotions of love. |
