Guillermo Silva - La Calumnie or The Slander

La Calumnie (The Slander)

Title: La Calumnie (The Slander)
Artist: Silva, Guillermo (Bogata, Colombia, 1921 - Resides, Malaga, Spain)
Date: 1969
Medium: Original Hand-Colored Etching
Note: Guillermo Silva Sanz de Santamaria 'Guillermo Silva': A twentieth century etcher, painter and sculptor, Guillermo Silva studied art techniques in his native city of Bogota. His first one-man exhibition was held there in 1953. Since that time his paintings and prints have been the subject of solo shows at galleries and museums in Washington, New York, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Mexico City, Toronto (Canada) Sao Paulo, (Brazil) Madras (India) Copenhagen, Stockholm, Zurich, Geneva, Bonn, Berlin, Vicenza (Italy) and numerous other international locations.
During the late 1950's Guillermo Silva moved to Mexico City and taught art at the Ibero-American University. He then moved to India and lived and worked there for a period of ten years. Silva lastly settled in Malaga, Spain, where he currently resides.
As an original printmaker, Guillermo Silva's complex techniques involve both color printings and hand-coloring. Each impression is unique and therefore the artist usually does not number his etchings in specific editions.
La Calumnie (The Slander) was created by Guillermo Silva in 1969. The object of the slander is the lovers at the window. All eyes are directed towards them and the elaborate stairs and scaffolding reaching the lovers from the courtyard is symbolic of the ever growing, malicious gossip. Both hand coloring and printed colors are evident in this fine etching.
Today the art of Guillermo Silva is found in many international museums and collections. American institutions that list his art in their permanent collections include the Minneapolis Art Institute, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, and the University of Montana.
