Ooka Shunboku - Shumboku - Daikoku The God of Wealth from the Ehon tekagami An Illustrated Book of Model Paintings

Daikoku, The God of Wealth from the Ehon tekagami (An Illustrated Book of Model Paintings)

Ooka Shunboku's original Japanese woodcut, "Daikoku, The God of Wealth" is printed upon 18th century Japanese mulberry paper and with full margins as published for his Ehon tekagami 'te-kagami' (An Illustrated Book of Model Paintings) in 1720. Daikoku is one of the traditional seven gods of Luck or Good Fortune. Known for his good-humoured disposition he is usually portrayed carrying a large sack of rice on his back. Here, Ooka Shunboku depicts Daikoku with an umbrella in one and his traditional treasure sack slung over his shoulder. This is a fine, original example of the important eighteenth century art created by the Japanese artist, Ooka Shunboku also spelt (Ooka Shumboku).

Note: Ooka Shunboku (Ooka Shumboku): An influential eighteenth century Japanese painter and illustrator of books, Ooka Shunboku, also spelt (Ooka Shumboku), lived and worked in both Osaka and Edo. Mainly self-taught he dedicated his art to the Kano tradition. Shumboku turned to the art of illustration in his middle age. Major books containing his art are Ehon tekagami (An Illustrated Book of Model Paintings), 1720, Ramma zushiki (Designs for Decorative Transoms), 1734, Mincho seido gaen (A Living Garden of Ming Painting), 1746, Wakan meigaen (A Garden of Celebrated Japanese and Chinese Paintings), 1750, Gashi kaiyo ( Six Volume set of representative paintings of Korea, China and Japan), 1751 and (Wakan sogyoku) Tansei kinno (1753). The Mincho seido gaen, published in 1746, is one of the earliest color woodblook books in Japanese history.
Being a Kano painter, Ooka Shunboku based almost all his compositions upon the art of ancient Chinese and Japanese masters. Daikoku, the God of Wealth originates from his first illustrated book, the six-volume ehon tekagami published in 1720. Daikoku is one of the traditional seven gods of Luck or Good Fortune. Known for his good-humoured disposition, he is usually portrayed carrying a large sack of rice on his back. Here, Ooka Shunboku depicts Daikoku with an umbrella in one and his traditional treasure sack slung over his shoulder.
Ooka Shunboku's paintings and woodcut illustrations earned him the honorary rank of 'hogen'. Interestingly, in the nineteenth century Hokusai was a major admirer of Sumboku's art.
