Note: | Sir Frank Short: An influential British painter, etcher, mezzotint and aquatint engraver and lithographer, Sir Frank Short first trained as an engineer before studying art at South Kensington and at Westminster. From 1891 to 1924 Short served as Head of the Engraving School at the Royal College of Art, and, he was also President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, from 1910 to 1939. For his work in this latter capacity he received a knighthood. As both an artist and teacher, Frank Short was responsible for reviving the use of both the mezzotint and aquatint processes. |
Sir Frank Short’s first original etching dates from 1882. Apart from his mezzotints and aquatints his original etchings and drypoints number two hundred and six. His graphic art will today be found in most major collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. Georgetown University lists another impression of A Cornfield, Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire in its permanent collection. | |
Sir Joshua Reynolds: One of England's most influential eighteenth century painters, Sir Joshua Reynolds studied art under the London portraitist, Thomas Hudson. Joshua Reynolds concluded his studies in Italy (1750-52) and then settled in London for the rest of his life. Altogether over two thousand portraits and historical works were painted by him. | |
Sir Joshua Reynolds was a friend of Johnson, Goldsmith, Burke, Gibbon and David Garrick and founded the Literary Club in 1764. When the Royal Academy was formed in 1768 Sir Joshua Reynolds was elected its first president. | |
