Robert Shipster & Leonardo da Vinci

Robert Shipster and Leonardo da Vinci - A Lawyer In His Majesty's Collection

A Lawyer, 'In His Majesty's Collection'

Robert Shipster’s original stipple engraving A Lawyer, 'In His Majesty's Collection' is based upon a drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci housed in the England's Royal collection at Windsor castle. It is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as created by Robert Shipster (sometimes spelt 'Robert Shepster') in 1806 for John Chamberlaine's important set of engravings also based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, "'Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". This impression bears the text, "From the Original drawing by Leo: da Vinci.", "Shepster Sculpt.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Publish'd as the Act directs Octr. 10. 1806. by J. Chamberlaine. Scotland Yard." in the lower margin, and also contains the plate number "PL. VIII." in the upper right corner. Other engravers who contributed to John Chamberlaine's, Imitations of Original Designs include Francesco Bartolozzi and P. W. Tomkins. This stipple is entirely engraved with a multitude of dots or flicks, as opposed to lines, thus rendering more tonality. It is a fine, original example of late eighteenth and early nineteenth century British stippling technique and the engraved art of Robert Shipster. This charming portrayal of a full-length figure depicts an older gentleman who appears to be holding a scroll or legal document in his right hand and is facing towards our right. He is most likely wearing a lawyer’s robe. Legal attire dates back to the early 14th century during the reign of Edward III (King of England and Lord of Ireland), when those in the legal profession distinguished themselves with a dress code that could maintain their grace and dignity while attending royal court. During the Middle Ages, A lawyer, then known as a ‘Man of Law’ was considered to be an apprentice to the judiciary.

Publisher: John Chamberlaine, London
Note: Robert Shipster 'Robert Shepster': A painter, draughtsman and engraver, Robert Shipster (sometimes spelt, ‘Robert Shepster’) was a student of Francesco Bartolozzi. He created stipple and line engravings for various prominent London publishers. These include his contributions to the "Macklin Bible", published by Cadell & Davies, London published serially between (1752’s – 1800). In the former category his most accomplished work is the "Witch of Endor", after Benjamin West. Robert Shipster also engraved plates after his own designs such as the portrait "George Lord Dartmouth", as well as drawings and engravings after contemporary and Renaissance artists, and in this category, these works include; "Isaiah’s Vision of the Messiah" after Henry Fuseli created for "The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope" published by F. J. Du Roveray, London, (1804). His portraits include "John Dunning Esqr." after Robert Stewart, "Horatio Nelson" after John Francis Rigaud, and "Sir Charles Saunders K. B. Admiral of the Blue Squadron, First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty" after Richard Brampton published by Robert Faulder in Charnock’s "Biographia Navalis" (1799). As well, he created many other accomplished 18th and early 19th century portraits, mythical and religious scenes and other subjects. "The Assumption of the Virgin with St. Peter and St. Jerome" is one of Shipster's exquisite drawings which hails from a series he created based upon designs by Guercino. This charming stipple engraving entitled "A Lawyer" was created in 1806 based upon a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci in the Royal Collection as commissioned by John Chamberlaine for the "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Robert Shipster’s art is now held in the collections of the National Library of Australia, the Royal Collection Trust, The National Portrait Gallery, London, The Royal Museums Greenwich, the British Museum, London, and other prestigious institutions.
Leonardo da Vinci: The true ‘Renaissance’ man, Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, an engineer and a scientist. In 1472 Leonardo enrolled as a painter in the fraternity of St. Luke in Florence. There he served his apprenticeship with Verrocchio. He moved to Milan around 1481 and remained there until 1499, working mostly at the court of Duke Ludovico Sforza.
Leonardo da Vinci’s completed paintings are relatively few. His numerous drawings, however, display aspects and ideas of one of the world’s most astute and inventive minds. His legacy to the arts is immense for it was Leonardo who established the concept of the artist as a creative thinker and not merely a craftsman.
A Lawyer, 'In His Majesty's Collection': This delightful portrayal depicts a full-length figure of an older gentleman (a lawyer) turned to our right. He is holding a scroll or legal document in his right hand and appears to be wearing a lawyer’s robe. The figure here is engraved with a multitude of dots or flicks, as opposed to lines throughout the entire composition in order to create strong tonal values and delicate hues. Briefly, a stipple engraving is created by using masses of flicks or dots rather than solid lines, making it a more tonal composition. It is a fine, original example of late eighteenth and early nineteenth century British stippling technique. Based upon Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing housed in the England's Royal collection at Windsor castle, this stipple engraving was created by Robert Shipster, also spelt 'Robert Shepster' in 1806 for John Chamberlaine's important set of engravings entitled "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". This impression bears the text, "From the Original drawing by Leo: da Vinci.", "Shepster Sculpt.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Publish'd as the Act directs Octr. 10. 1806. by J. Chamberlaine. Scotland Yard." in the lower margin, and the plate number "PL. VIII." in the upper right corner. Other engravers who contributed to John Chamberlaine's, Imitations of Original Designs include Francesco Bartolozzi and P. W. Tomkins.
During the Middle Ages, A lawyer, then known as a ‘Man of Law’ was considered to be an apprentice to the judiciary. Legal and judicial dress has its origins in royal and ecclesiastical history. However, English legal attire was more or less established by the early 14th century during the reign (1327-1377) of Edward III (King of England and Lord of Ireland). As fashion trends evolved light surcoats became more popular than the gowns worn by early legal practitioners becoming a symbol of the English legal profession so as to distinguish them with a dress code that could maintain their grace and dignity while attending royal court. By 1635, the definitive guide to court dress was published in the Judges’ Rules, but this was to change with a less formal version taking its place in time.
John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty’s Collection, John Chamberlaine’s greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein’s portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, ‘Historical Engraver to his Majesty’.
In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi, Robert Shipster and other stipple engravers. The following year, John Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, Engravings from the "Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty’s Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 Engravings from the "Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty’s Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection.
