John Keyse Sherwin's "The Politician" is based upon one of William Hogarth's sketches. It was first published in 1775 by his widow, Mrs. Jane Hogarth. This impression originates from the Heath edition, published in 1822. It is reported that the subject of this satirical etching is William Hogarth's shortsighted friend, Ebenezer Forrest. A lacemaker and politician, Forrest is here portrayed reading his newspaper while he inadvertently sets fire to his hat. The Politician is an original engraving and etching printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. This is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the British artists, John Keyse Sherwin and William Hogarth. |

Note: | John Keyse Sherwin: An eminent line and stipple engraver and etcher of portraits, decorative and historical subjects, John Keyse Sherwin was born into a poor family. His considerable talents were recognized at an early age and Sherwin thus became a pupil of John Astley, in 1769. John Keyse Sherwin then enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools in 1770 and studied under Bartolozzi until 1774. Even at this time, John Keyse Sherwin was considered one of England's finest engravers. Hence he received many important commissions, such as, The Politician, which was published by Mrs. Jane Hogarth in 1775. |
During the following years John Keyse Sherwin continued to rise in professional esteem. In 1785 he succeeded William Woollett to the advantageous position of "Engraver to the King" (George III). Despite John Keyse Sherwin's rapidly gained successes, however, it is said he lived a "dissolute life", and died in 1790 at the age of thirty-nine.
John Keyse Sherwin was a master of many styles. Whether in stippling, engraving or etching, his imagery always exhibited the fluid and graceful lines of a late eighteenth century master. In The Politician, John Keyse Sherwin brilliantly captured Hogarth's drawing methods with his etched line.
William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, mainly under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Rake's Progress (1731), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
