Note: |
John Keyse Sherwin: An eminent line and stipple
engraver and etcher of portraits, decorative and historical subjects, John
Keyse Sherwin was born into a poor family. His considerable talents were
recognized at an early age and Sherwin thus became a pupil of John Astley,
in 1769. John Keyse Sherwin then enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools in 1770 and
studied under Bartolozzi until 1774. Even at this time, John Keyse Sherwin was considered
one of England's finest engravers. Hence he received many important commissions,
such as, The Politician, which was published by Mrs. Jane Hogarth
in 1775, and this important memorial portrait of the British prime minister,
William Pitt. |
|
During the following years John Keyse Sherwin continued to
rise in professional esteem. In 1785 he succeeded William Woollett to the
advantageous position of "Engraver to the King" (George III).
Despite John Keyse Sherwin's rapidly gained successes, however, it is said he lived
a "dissolute life", and died in 1790 at the age of thirty-nine. |
|
John Keyse Sherwin was a master of many styles. Whether in stippling,
engraving or etching, his imagery always exhibited the fluid and graceful
lines of a late eighteenth century master. William Pitt, 1st Earl of
Chatham was both engraved and published by John Keyse Sherwin. It is considered
to be among his greatest achievements in the art of portraiture. |
|
Richard Brampton: Born in 1734, Richard Brampton a was well known British artist, highly regarded as a portrait artist. Such works include, Portrait of Chatherine II (1782), housed at the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Edward, Duke of York with his friends, (c. 1764), housed in the Royal Collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Portrait of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, and others. |
|
William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham (1708 - 1778): William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham was born
in Cornwall in 1708. Educated at Eton and Oxford, Pitt entered Parliament
and became Walpole's most opponent. As Prime Minister, William Pitt's accomplishments
are considerable. It was under his administration that Wolfe was sent to
secure Canada from the French. His next feat was to conquer India. During
his final years in office, William Pitt fought in vain for a more conciliatory policy
towards the American Colonies. If his colleagues had listened the map of
North America might today be markedly altered. William Pitt died on May 11, 1778.
This important engraving, published just three months after his death, was
thus meant as a tribute to one of England's greatest eighteenth century
statesmen. |
