Note: | Thomas H. Sherratt (London, active, 1850 - 1865): Thomas Sherratt was a line and stipple engraver of portraits and historical subjects. The fame of Thomas Sherratt rests mainly upon his two large compositions of contemporary military events. "The Storming of of Delhi", after M. S. Morgan, listed as 'Matthew Somerville Morgan' (1839-1890), engraved and published in 1859, and the "Charge of the Heavy Cavalry at Balaclava", engraved in 1860. Delhi was far from content under British rule. Mutinies were frequent. This engraving deals with the largest revolt, which occurred in the late 1850's. Delhi managed to free itself entirely until a siege of the city was commenced by Major General Barnard on June 8. 1857. He died in an attempt to recapture Delhi one month later and his command passed to Brigadier General Wilson. The Cashmere Gate was stormed by English troops on September 14. This engraving depicts this action. Fighting continued in the street for the next five days. On September, 20th the Royal Palace was taken and the city of Delhi surrendered. General Wilson was created a Baronet of the United Kingdom with the title of 'Sir Archdale Wilson of Delhi, K.C.B' on November, 20th 1857. "Storming of Delhi" is said to have been based upon first hand accounts and represents the only large and visual account of this momentous struggle. An impression of Thomas Sherratt's Storming of Delhi is included in the permanent collection, of the Brown University Library, RI. | |
