James A. Shell 'James Shell': A contemporary American printmaker,
James A. Shell studied art at East Carolina University, Penland School
of Arts and Crafts, NC, and at Averett College, Danville, Virginia. For
many years, the artist worked from his graphics studio situated in Yanceyville,
North Carolina. James Shell's aquatints and etchings have been extensively exhibited
in such states as North Carolina, Virginia and New York. He has also received
numerous awards for his art, including the Pembroke Competition Prize. |

Shades of Winter is a fine example of James Shell's printmaking
techniques. His use of deep etching and aquatint, in particular, helps
to convey a strong, almost sculpted quality to his work. |

Printed upon hand made paper with the 'Arches' watermark
and with full, deckled margins as published in Baltimore in the limited
edition of 150 signed impressions. Signed, dated, titled and numbered,
'32/150' by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Shades of
Winter is a finely printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. |
