Henry Shaw: The early nineteenth century English interest in medieval
and Gothic art, architecture and ornamentation owed a large debt to the
work of three artists; Augustus Pugin (1762-1832), Joseph Nash (1808-1878)
and Henry Shaw (1880-1873). Both an architectural artist and an antiquary,
Henry Shaw combined his artistic gifts with meticulous and scholarly
research which made his publications among the finest of the times. Such
great lithographic works as Illuminated Ornaments (1833), Specimens of
Ancient Furniture (1836) and The Art of Illumination (1866) are from
his hand. Henry Shaw's important art helped to develop an appreciation
and aided in the preservation of many fine ancient buildings. |
