Note: | Edward W. Sharland 'Edward Sharland': An English architectural and landscape etcher, Edward W. Sharland was a full member of the Fine Art Trade Guild. His etchings were exhibited in Liverpool, Bristol and at the Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Academy, London. Specializing in both colour and black and white etchings, much of Edward Sharland's work was published in London by either Frost and Reed or Bell. Several of his etchings were also published in both London and New York by C. Klackner. Well traveled, Edward Sharland's etchings include scenes of cities in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Holland as well as views of London, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol. |
The Black Gate, St. John's, Besancon was probably published by Frost and Reed. Accompanying this impression is the publisher's label which provides the title as well as these words, "An original etching by E. Sharland. Edition strictly limited to 150 impressions. Signed by Mr. Sharland. No other state. Plate Destroyed." With its fine delineation of architecture and figures and its beautifully printed tones and hues, this original etching is one of Edward Sharland's greatest works of etched art. | |
