Note: | Henry Pruett Share: The path by the shore was etched by the well known engraver, Henry Pruett Share. A talented etcher as well as an illustrator, he was a full member of the influential New York Etching Club and contributed a number of fine etchings to national exhibitions before the turn of the century. The Path by the Shore is a collaboration between Henry Pruett Share's talents and those of the American landscape and genre painter, Albert F. Bellows. Bellow's landscape designs have often been grouped with American Impressionism. |
Albert Fitch Bellows, 'Albert Bellows', 'A. F. Bellows': An outstanding nineteenth century American landscape artist, A. F. Bellows first studied architecture. He then accepted the post of Principal of the New England School of Design, Boston, remaining there from 1850 to 1856. He then resigned to complete his studies first in Paris and then in Antwerp at the Royal Academy. Albert Fitch Bellows was elected to the Royal Society of Painters in Belgium several years later. Upon his return to the United States he lived and worked mainly in Boston until the great fire of 1872, in which his studio and much of his work was destroyed.
During the last decade of his life, A. F. Bellows opened a very successful studio on Fourth Avenue in New York. It was at this time that he devoted much of his time to the original art of etching, becoming a member of the New York Etching Club, the Philadelphia Society of Etchers and the prestigious Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, London, England. Albert Fitch Bellows was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1859 and a full member in 1861.
The 19th Century Remarque Proof Impression: In the late 19th century American and British publishers of large engravings and etchings would produce a small number of remarque proofs before publication of the regular edition. 'Remarque' refers to the small etching found under the main image in the lower margin. In the case of The Path by the Shore, the 'Remarque' is a design of logs. Remarques were meant to compliment the composition, and were removed for the publication of the regular edition. 'Proofs' were the first impressions to be pulled from the plate and before the addition of the title along the lower margin. Proofs thus constitute the finest impressions. As well, in the Victorian era, Proofs were printed on special papers, such as China or India papers, or on expensive materials such as silk or vellum. Remarque Proofs impressions were hand-signed by the artists. It should also be noted that this particular impression is a signed remarque proof impression.
The New York firm of C. Klackner, published original etchings by late 19th and early 20th century artists and designers such as, Winslow Homer, William Magrath, James S. King, Frederick Spiegle, Charles Spiegle, John T. Bentley, Gustave Mercier, Leon Moran, Eugene Michel Joseph Abot, Edward W. Sharland, James Scott, John George Brown, Albert Fitch Bellows, Henry Pruett Share, and other notable artists from this period. The Path by the Shore is a striking example of the art published by Christian Klackner.
