Note: | Walter Severn: Walter Severn was born into an artistic family. His father, Joseph Severn (1793-1879) was both a painter and the British Consul in Rome. Walter Severn's younger brother, Joseph Arthur Severn (1842-1931) and younger sister Ann Mary Severn (1832-1866) were also artists of note. |
In 1841 the Severn family returned to London and Walter studied at the Westminster School from 1843 to 1847. Like his father Walter Severn had two careers, both as an artist and as an officer in the civil service. In the former capacity Severn was a regular exhibitor at such major institutions as the Walker Art Gallery, the Society of British Artists and Agnew and Sons Gallery, from 1853 to 1889. He was also a full member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and a founding member of the Dudley Gallery.
Walter Severn illustrated a number of fine books such as Good Night and Good Morning (1859), Deer and Forest Scenery and Morning and Evening Service. He was also very interested in the applied arts and worked as a collaborator and designer with Sir Charles Eastlake. Today his fine landscape and marine art is included in such collections as the National Museum of Australia, Sydney, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Walter Severn was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, John Wright Oakes, Matthew James Lawless, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862. Nearing Home was the twenty-third plate for Passages and is thus numbered in the upper right corner.
