Arthur Severn (Joseph Arthur Severn)

Arthur Severn - Old Cheyne Walk

Old Cheyne Walk

Arthur Severn's original etching, "Old Cheyne Walk" was commissioned for the late nineteenth and early twentieth century British annual dedicated to the visual arts, "The Art Journal". "Old Cheyne Walk" is printed on 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published by "London, J.S. Virtue & Co. Limited in 1882. It is signed in the plate by Joseph Arthur Severn to the lower right and bears the full publisher's address, the title, "Old Cheyne Walk " and the text "Drawn and Etched by Arthur Severn" along the lower margin under the etching.

Title: Old Cheyne Walk
Artist: Severn, Joseph Arthur 'Arthur Severn (London, 1842 - 1931)
Date: 1882
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: London, J.S. Virtue & Co. Limited
Source: The Art Journal, London
Note: Joseph Arthur Palliser Severn: Arthur Severn belonged to a very artistic family. His father, Joseph Severn (1793-1879), was a well known historical and portrait painter, his brother, Walter (1830-1904), a landscape painter and his sister, Mary (1832-1866), a portrait painter. Arthur Severn studied art in both Paris and Rome and throughout his career specialized in marine and landscape paintings and etchings.
Arthur Severn first began exhibiting his art at the Royal Academy in 1863 and continued to annually exhibit there until 1896. He was also an active exhibitor at the Dudley Gallery, Fine Art Society, Grosvenor Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, Leicester Gallery and at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool. Arthur Severn was a founder member of the Arts Club (1863) and a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (1882) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (1883).
In 1871, Arthur Severn married Joan Agnew, the niece of John Ruskin. Ruskin (1819-1900) was the most influential English art critic of the century. He promoted the concept of beauty for its own sake and believed the artist should assume the role of both prophet and teacher. It is generally held that Arthur Severn was influenced by Ruskin's philosophy and indeed the artist traveled with him to Italy in 1872. Yet when Ruskin's criticisms of the modernist art of J. M. Whistler and Whistler's counter-attacks upon the writings of Ruskin resulted in the 1878 Ruskin-Whistler trial, Arthur Severn considered Ruskin's comments to be unjust and, as much as possible, defended Whistler's paintings and etchings. "Old Cheyne Walk", in fact, is quite 'Whistlerian' in both its subject matter and treatment, particularly in its fine use of space and perspective.
The Art Journal: "The Art Journal" was an important late nineteenth and early twentieth century annual dedicated to the visual arts. Such leading artists as Axel Haig, J. M. W. Whistler, Seymour Haden, Herbert Von Herkomer, Alfred Brunet-Debaines, John MacWhirter, Miles Birket Foster, Sir Charles Holroyd, Alphonse Legros, John MacWhirter, Arthur Severn and others contributed original etched.plates to The Art Journal, London over several decades.

Arthur Severn's original etching, "Old Cheyne Walk" was commissioned by "The Art Journal" in 1882. Of this etching the editors wrote:

"The square steeple of the church where Sir Thomas More lies buried, the row of trees by the river, the old house with the archway, all make up a pleasant Dutch picture of what was Cheyne Walk. Here, too, boats are moored, some upon the mud-bank, others upon a great wooden raft that lies upon the mud. There are many shadows of sudden sun and cloud and breeze; a barge with a filling sail is traveling quickly towards the shore. The shadows are short, the light is not yet in the west, a thousand crisp little waves are on the river, and a thousand pleasant lights among the boats; a vaguely sketched figure leans against the posts of the embankment, watching some men who are overhauling a rope below.

Is this all? Perhaps to most of us this picture will mean something more than an old brick roadway, with a few trees spreading their green; there are remembrances which belong now to Cheyne Walk and Cheyne Row, and names dear to every English heart will be for long years to come engraven upon the stones of this quiet place by the river."
