Mark Fernand Severin's original wood engraving, Ex Libris Pepita Palle (Mi Agrada Molt Viatjar) dates from 1968. A great illustrator and engraver, Mark Severin designed and engraved over two hundred bookplates during the course of his career. Pepita Palle, the owner of this delightful bookplate, must have been quite the globetrotter. Not only does Severin provide her with mercurial wings to race around the planet, but he also engraves the following words in Portuguese within the image; "Mi Agrada Molt Viatjar" ('I Like To Travel a Lot'). Ex Libris Pepita Palle is printed on smooth wove paper and with full margins as created at the date stated. It is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the Belgian artist, Mark Fernand Severin. |

Note: | Mark Fernand Severin 'Mark Severin': A famous engraver and illustrator, Mark Fernand Severin was equally at home in his native Belgium and in England. Mark Severin first came to England during the First World War and attended school in Oxford. He completed his education at Ghent University, studying philosophy, archaeology and art. Mainly self taught in engraving techniques, Severin received some technical instructions from such great British engravers as Eric Gill, Buckland Wright and Eric Ravilious. His first illustrated book was published in Amsterdam in 1929. |
In 1931 Mark Severin took the position of Art Director at the London advertising agency. C. R. Casson. He remained there until 1939 and during this decade created memorable posters for such British organizations as Imperial Airways and London Transport, and for such companies as Shell and ICI. Severin returned to Belgium (Antwerp) in 1948 to serve as Professor of Wood-Engraving at the Institut Superieur des Beaux-Arts and as Professor of Graphic Design at the Institut Plantin des Hautes Etudes Typographiques.
During the following years Mark Severn illustrated many books with his engravings, including limited editions for such noted publishers as Golden Cockerel Press and the Folio Society. He was also the author and illustrator of "Making a Bookplate" (1949) and "Your Wood-Engraving" (1955), and also co-authored the book, "Engraved Bookplates, European Ex Libris" 1950-70 (1972).
Mark Fernand Severin was also a great illustrator and engraver, he designed and engraved over two hundred bookplates during the course of his career, such as this delightful wood engraving commissioned by the Ex Libris bookplate collector, Pepita Palle. She must have been quite the globetrotter. Not only does Mark Severin provide her with mercurial wings to race around the planet, but he also engraves the following words in Portuguese within the image; "Mi Agrada Molt Viatjar" ('I Like To Travel a Lot').
Mark Fernand Severin was a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium, and a commander of both the Order of Leopold and the Order of the Crown. One man exhibitions of his fine art have taken place in England, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Shanghai and the United States.
A Note on Ex Libris Art: Ex-Libris woodcuts, wood engravings and etchings have their beginnings as far back as the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as plates used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and the finished work of art often came to stand as an owner’s claim to fame. Before long famous artists were commissioned by wealthy collectors to create their ex libris designs and during the centuries such great talents as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great genre.
The golden era for ex-libris art was during the twentieth century, most particularly in the Art Deco decade of the 1930’s. Collecting of ex-libris etchings, engravings and wood engravings reached such a height at this time that many artists devoted themselves almost exclusively to this area.
