Note: | Georges, Baron Cuvier (France, 1769 - 1832): The eminent French naturalist, Georges, Baron Cuvier has been called the most formost comparative anatomist of all time. Based upon a lifetime of research upon living and extinct animals, "Le Regne Animal" (The Animal Kingdom) was first published in Paris in 1817. It was in this epic work that Cuvier first propounded the theory that a series of catastrophies accounted for the presence of fossilized remains of animal species which were no longer living. During the first half of the nineteenth century, further and expanded editions of "Le Regne Animal" (The Animal Kingdom) continued to make Cuvier the most influential natural scientist of the time. |
By far the most exhaustive and desirable of "Le Regne Animal" editions was the Paris publication which appeared in parts during a thirteen year period from 1836 to 1849. Each division was accompanied by a series of brilliantly designed and detailed engravings, complete with both full views of the animals and enlarged views of various parts. This massive thirteen year project involved the talents of many designers and engravers, yet perhaps the most spectacular aspect involving these early nineteenth century works of art belongs to the artists commissioned to hand-colour each and every engraving. As one can see in this original example, the painstaking attention to all the subtle colours and hues explains why these early nineteenth century engravings have long been sought after as being among the finest natural history engravings of their era. This original engraving depicting the (1. Thalassine Scorioponide, (Scorpion) 2. Axie Stirhynque, 3. Callianasse Souterraine) hails from Cuvier's "Le Regne Animal". | |
