Note: | Edward Scriven: An early British nineteenth century stipple, aquatint and line engraver, Edward Scriven apprenticed as a pupil of Robert Thew. Early in his career he came to London to work on plates for the great London publisher, John Boydell. In the following years his engravings appeared in such well known sets as "Specimens of Ancient Sculpture", Dibdin's, "Aedes Althorpianae" and Tresham's, "Gallery of Pictures". Edward Scriven also created important portraits of such dignitaries as The Prince Regent, King George IV and Viscount Nelson. Around 1820 Edward Scriven was appointed 'Historical Engraver' to King George IV. |
Nelson is a most important memorial portrait. It of course portrays Britain's greatest naval commander, Viscount Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). Edward Scriven was commissioned by the publisher, Robert Boyer, to engrave this portrait which was published on December 9, 1805. Nelson's life ended at the moment of his greatest victory at Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. This moving portrait thus appeared around six weeks after Nelson's death and must have been one of the first memorials. Nelson's portrait appears in the clouds. Under him is a depiction of the famous battle of Trafalgar. | |
