Alois Konrad Schwarzler's original woodcut depicts a famous landmark of the Church of St. Prokolus (or Proculus) which lies on the outskirts of the village of Naturns in the South Tyrol region. It was constructed in the first half of the seventh century and has within its walls the oldest known fresco in the German speaking lands. Its Romanesque tower was constructed in the twelfth century. In the background one can see Juval Castle and Noerderberg Mountain. "St. Prokolus" (or Proculus) is printed on smooth wove paper and with large margins as printed by the artist in the early twentieth century. This impression is signed in the block with Alois Schwarzler's 'A.S.' monogram and signed in pencil and annotated, "Orig Holzschnitt" (Original Woodcut), along the lower margin. It is a fine, original example of the folk art created by the Austrian artist, Alois Schwarzler |

Note: | Alois Konrad Schwarzler 'Alois Schwarzler': An early twentieth century Austrian artist of the woodcut, Alois Konrad Schwarzler lived and worked in such locations as St. Moritz im Engadin, Riva am Gardasee, Innsbruck and the South Tyrol town of Gossensass. In this latter named town, in fact, Alois Schwarzler and his wife owned and operated a thriving folk art shop. During the First World War, Italian troops annexed the South Tyrol area and Alois Schwarzler sold his house and shop in Gossensass, subsequently moving to Rattenberg, Kramsach Tyrolean and, finally, Innsbruck. |
During his career Alois Schwarzler produced many woodcuts, particularly small, ex-libris designs. Large woodcuts, such as, St. Prokolus, are quite scarce within the artist's oeuvre. This original woodcut contains all the striking elements that have made the folk art of Alois Konrad Schwarzler famous.
In 2008, the community of Gossensass presented a retrospective exhibition of Alois Schwarzler's woodcut art entitled, "Den Ex-Libris Meister von Gossensass ne entdeckt" (The Gossensass Master of Ex-Libris Plates Rediscovered).
