Jerome Schurr 'Jerry Schurr': A leading contemporary
silk-screen artist, Jerry Schurr studied art and printmaking techniques
at the University of Hawaii (1960-1961), Temple University (1961-1963),
University of Pennsylvania (1958-1960 and 1965-1969) and at the Pennsylvania
Academy of the Fine Arts (1958-1960 and 1965-1969). His first published
silk-screen (serigraph) dates from 1971. Since that date Jerry Schurr
has created many fine paintings and serigraphs of the American landscape
and he has been the recipient of such prizes and awards as the Thouron
Prize (Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts), the Eugene Feldman Memorial
Prize (Philadelphia Print Club) and the John Martinen Purchase Prize
(National Arts Club). |
|
Jerry Schurr's silk-screen prints from the 1980's
and 1990's mainly portray the American landscape. Some of his finest
landscapes deal with locations in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado
and Arizona, where the stark majesty of land, water and sky is best delineated
by his silk-screen methods. Beyond any doubt, Sweet Briar Lake
is a spectacular example of Schurr's craftsmanship. At this time the artist
actually created two distinct prints entitled, Sweet Briar Lake, North-West
and Sweet Briar Lake, North. Both were published in New York in
1983 in limited, signed editions of 290 impressions by John Szoke Graphics. |
|
Today the art of Jerry Schurr is included in the permanent
collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Minneapolis Museum of
Art, Honolulu Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art, Delaware Art Museum,
New York City Public Library and the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. |
