Note: | William Emile Schumacher 'William Schumacher': An important painter and graphic artist, William Emile Schumacher studied art in Paris at the Academe Julian. He remained in Paris until 1893 and exhibited his art there at the Salons. Upon his return, Schumacher designed posters for both Boston and New York publishers. Shortly after the turn of the century William Schumacher became intrigued with modern art, particularly the Fauvist concepts of Matisse and Othon Friesz. He exhibited his modern art at the influential 1913 Armory Show in New York. William E. Schumacher then moved to the newly founded art colony at Woodstock and became an important teacher there. |
William Schumacher was a full member of the Woodstock Art Association, Society of Independent Artists and the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony. During his fine career he exhibited his art with such major institutions as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy and the Society of Independent Artists.
American Art Nouveau: In the final decade of the nineteenth century the Art Nouveau phenomenon hit the United States by storm. European leaders of the movement, such as Grasset, Mucha and Toulouse-Lautrec, contributed original poster designs to American companies. Yet the rapid rise of American artists in the Art Nouveau field, such as Louis Rheade, Will Bradley, Maxfield Parrish, Edward Penfield, William Schumacher and a host of others, quickly gave the United States as great a grouping of Art Nouveau artists as any European nation.
American Art Nouveau reached its pinnacle during the mid 1890's. Publishers of both periodicals and books, extensively commissioned the talents of these artists. Much to their consternation, however, it soon became obvious that the advertising posters the artists produced for them were in much more demand than the products they advertised. Now, more than a century later, collectors are still avidly seeking original examples from this brief but glorious movement in American art.
Provenance: | This original lithographic poster was formerly in the collection of Ned Arden Flood. N. A. Flood is listed as one of the three greatest early collectors of American Art Nouveau posters (see Margolin, p. 20). At one time his extensive collection housed over one thousand examples of American posters from the 1890’s. |
