Note: | Wilhelm Von Kaulbach: One of Germany's finest nineteenth century artists, Wilhelm Von Kaulbach received his first lessons in painting from his father, a goldsmith. In 1821, Wilhelm Von Kaulbach enrolled in the Academy at Dusseldorf, first studying under and then working with Cornelius. His first commissions for his work began in 1826, and in the following decades Wilhelm Von Kaulbach rose to become Germany's best known oil and fresco painters of historical and genre scenes. |
An equally important aspect of Wilhelm Von Kaulbach's career was his work as a designer. In fact, he is now remembered more for his illustrations of Shakespeare, Schiller and Goethe than for anything else. Wilhelm Von Kaulbach's engravings after the fiction of Goethe have stood for well over a century as the definitive pictorial representations of the genius of this famous German author. Wilhelm Von Kaulbach first designed the fascinating animal satires for Goethe's, Reineke Fuchs in 1845. This series was so successful that he initiated a second project in this vein in 1859, entitled the Goethe Gallerie. The entire project consisted of over fifty plates engraved by various artists including Stang, A. Schultheis and J.L. Raab and was published in Munich in 1864. The Goethe Gallerie thus took almost five years to complete, the reason primarily being that each engraving was meticulously worked upon to show such a diversity of shades, tones and details that they are now regarded as being among the most technically accomplished engravings of the nineteenth century. This is clearly shown in this original example entitled, Friederike from the series. In particular, the expressions on the faces of each individual are amazing. It is, therefore, no wonder that these engravings are held in such high regard. | |
