In this original lithograph,
entitled, Summer Sky, Jon Schueler explores his primary artistic concern.
He has written, "When I speak of nature, I speak of the sky, because
the sky has become all of nature to me. But it is most particularly the
brooding, storm-ridden sky over the Sound of Sleat (Scotland) in which
I find the living image of past dreams, dreams which had emerged from memory
and the swirl of paint. Here I can see the drama of nature charged and
compressed. Lands form, seas disappear, worlds fragment, colors merge or
give birth to burning shapes, mountain snows show emerald green. Or, for
a long moment, life stops still when the gales pause and the sky clears
after long days of careening sound and horizontal rain or snow." |

Jon Schueler: A twentieth century American painter
and printmaker, Jon Schueler first studied both economics and English literature
at the University of Wisconsin (B.A., 1938; M.A., 1940). In 1941 he joined
the Air Corps of the United States Army and in 1943 served as a B17 navigator
for the 303rd Bomber Group, 427th Squadron, flying missions over France
and Germany. He received his medical retirement as Ist Lieutenant in 1944.
After the Second World War Jon Schueler lived first in Los Angeles and then San
Francisco. In 1948 he enrolled at California School of Fine Arts (presently the
San Francisco Art Institute) and studied under such masters as Clyfford Still,
Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, Hassell Smith and Mark Rothko. In 1951, Jon Schueler
moved to New York and remained there until he accepted the position of Visiting
Artist at the Yale University School of Art (1960-1962). Schueler then served
as visiting artist at the Maryland Institute (1963-1967), and Head of Graduate
and Undergraduate Painting and Sculpture at the University of Illinois (1968-1969). |
|
In 1957 Jon Schueler made his first visit the Scottish
fishing village of Mallaig. The landscape (particularly the sky) of the
area had a profound effect upon his art. He established a studio there
and spent much of career in Mallaig producing both paintings and original lithographs. |
