A highly respected lithographer and etcher, Karl Schrag studied as the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Geneva (1931), the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris (1932) and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere (1931-1935). He then completed his education at The Art Students League, New York, when he emigrated to the United States in 1938. Karl Schrag became an American citizen in 1944. | |
During his career, Karl Schrag both traveled and taught extensively. In this latter vein, he was an instructor at both Columbia University and at Brooklyn College. In 1950, he was also appointed Director of New York's prestigious Atelier 17. | |
For over fifty years the paintings and original prints of Karl Schrag were featured in many major international exhibitions. The Print Club of Cleveland: Flowering Tree - Moonlight is an original lithograph print, #590 commissioned by the Print Club of Cleveland in 1990 and published by them in a signed limited edition of 260 impressions. The Print Club of Cleveland is a non-profit adjunct organization and the country's first museum-affiliated print club devoted to the promotion of art and printmaking as a fine art for printmakers and collectors alike. Since its creation in 1919, it has helped to support the growth of the department of prints and drawings at the Cleveland Museum of Fine Arts and has also been a source of great enrichment for collectors of fine prints. During its long life the club has annually commissioned one original etching engraving, lithograph, woodcut and or other form of original graphic art from such fine American artists as John Taylor Arms, Suzanne Anker, Luigi Lucioni, Will Barnet, Lyonel Feininger, Henry George Keller, Louis Lozowick, Karl Schrag, David Jansheski, Deborah Remington, and Peter Takal as well as from leading international artists such as Henri Matisse, Edmund Blampied, Jean-Emile Laboureur, Mark Tobey, Salvador Dali, Michael di Cerbo, Phyllis Sloane, Paolo Boni, Juvenal Sanso and Norman Ackroyd a nd many other outstanding artists. | |
