Ferdinand Schmutzer - Entdecktes Geheimniss or The Secret Disclosed

Entdecktes Geheimniss (The Secret Disclosed)

Ferdinand Schmutzer's Entdecktes Geheimniss (The Secret Disclosed) is an original etching printed upon wove paper and with full, deckled margins as published by Seemann and Company in 1897. It is signed by the artist in pencil in the lower right margin. Lacking the publisher's and printer's address which signifies an early proof impression. Entdecktes Geheimniss is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the Austrian artist, Ferdinand Schmutzer.

Title: Entdecktes Geheimniss (The Secret Disclosed)
Artist: Schmutzer, Ferdinand (Vienna, 1870 - 1928)
Date: 1897
Medium: Original Etching (Signed, Proof Impression)
Publisher: Seemann and Company
Note: Ferdinand Schmutzer: A prominent Austrian etcher, Ferdinand Schmutzer studied art in Vienna, under Kuhne and William Unger, and finished his education in Paris and in Holland. Around the turn of the century Ferdinand Schmutzer gained a strong reputation throughout Europe for his delicate and perceptive studies of rural life, particularly his interior scenes. In Ferdinand Schmutzer's later years he specialized in portraits of prominent individuals and held the influential post of Professor of Etching at the Vienna Academy. His art and theories thus influenced many fine etchers of the 1920's and 1930's. Today the etchings of Ferdinand Schmutzer are housed in the permanent collections of major public museums in Dusseldorf, Berlin and Vienna. His etched art gained for him Gold Medals at both the Dresden and Vienna Expositions.
This impression of Entdecktes Geheimniss (The Secret Disclosed) is a signed artist's proof printed before the etching was published by Seemann & Company in 1897. The regular edition was not signed in hand and bore the printed names of the publisher and printer along the lower margin. Significant changes also took place for the published work of art. Most important, The old lady, seated and facing the viewer, was completely eliminated and Ferdinand Schmutzer further intensified areas of light both on the floor and the back wall. This possibly unique impression is thus of great value because it shows how Ferdinand Schmutzer advanced towards his completed imagery. Entdecktes Geheimniss (The Secret Disclosed) is also one of Ferdinand Schmutzer's most famous works of etched art.
Size: 5 5/8 X 3 7/8 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
