Adrian Schleich's original engraving, "Reynard as a Pilgrim" is based upon a design created by Wilhelm von Kaulbach. It originates from one of Germany's greatest illustrated books of the nineteenth century, "Reineke Fuchs". Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) wrote his free translation of "Reynard the Fox" in 1794. The genesis of these satirical fables, or bestiaries, however, can be traced as far back as 1200. In these fables, the fox symbolizes the less than admiral individual who cunningly preys upon others. In 1845 an illustrated version of Goethe's "Reineke Fuchs" was published. All the engravings were designed by the German artist, Wilhelm von Kaulbach. Since that time these engravings have been as closely linked to "Reynard the Fox" as John Tenniel's designs are for "Alice in Wonderland". "Reynard as a Pilgrim" is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by Adrian Schleich and Wilhelm von Kaulbach's famous designs for "Reineke Fuchs" (Reynard the Fox). |

Note: | Wilhelm von Kaulbach: A major German painter and designer, Wilhelm von Kaulbach received his first lessons in painting from his father, a goldsmith. In 1821, Kaulbach enrolled in the Academy at Dusseldorf, first studying under and then working with Cornelius. His first commissions for his paintings took place in 1826 and, in the following decades, Wilhelm von Kaulbach rose to become one of Germany's best known oil and fresco painters of historical and genre scenes. |
An equally important aspect of Wilhelm von Kaulbach's career was his work as a designer and in this field he created illustrations after the writings of Shakespeare, Schiller and, most importantly, Goethe. Kaulbach's designs after the writings of Goethe have stood for well over a century as the definitive pictorial representations of the works of this famous German author. Wilhelm von Kaulbach first designed the famous animal satires for Goethe's "Reineke Fuchs" in 1845. This series was so successful that he initiated a second project in this vein in 1859, entitled the "Goethe Gallerie". This latter set was completed and published in 1864. | |
