Karpathenhuter ('Carpathian Herdsman')

Hildegard Schieb's original woodcut, "Karpathenhuter" ('Carpathian Herdsman'), was created by the Romanian artist around 1950. This impression is printed upon fine, handmade mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published by the artist using two separate blocks of gray and black. It is signed, titled and annotated, 'Handdrucke' (hand printed), by Hildegard Schieb in pencil along the lower margin. This landscape scene depicts a shepherd of the Carpathian Mountains playing his wonderful horn. The instrument called a (trembita) is used by shepherds to signal their locations in the mountains or to call their sheep in at dusk. "Karpathenhuter" is a fine, original example of the woodcut art created by the 20th century Romanian artist, Hildegard Schieb.

Note:	Hildegard Schieb: Born in Romania, Hildegard Schieb studied at the Budapest College of Arts and Crafts and graduated in 1918. She then concluded her studies at the Leipzig Academy, under George Belwe and H. A. Mueller. After graduation, Hildegard Schieb moved to Hermannstadt and began a successful career as a graphic and design artist for various companies. She was also in demand as a book illustrator and ex-libris designer, mainly in the medium of woodcuts.
	Hildegard Schieb's art came to the attention of the German government during the Second World War and she was ordered in 1944 to work in Munich designing porcelain figures. After the termination of the war she moved to Hattingen. Becoming a member of the artistic association, 'Federation Bochum', she traveled and worked in Yugoslavia, Romania, France, Spain and Italy. From this time onwards, Hildegard Schieb devoted her art mainly to watercolours, woodcuts and linocuts. Her woodcuts and linocuts, which contained up to six separate hand-pulled blocks, gained her a national reputation.
	Karpathenhuter ('Carpathian Herdsman') dates from around 1950 and is one of Hildegard Schieb's greatest original woodcuts. Using two separate blocks of gray and black, she printed each impression completely by hand. The edition size of Karpathenhuter ('Carpathian Herdsman') is not known, but as Hildegard Schieb meticulously hand printed each impression it is unlikely that more than twenty prints were published.
	The subject for this beautifully rendered, large woodcut is a shepherd of the Carpathian Mountains. The wonderful horn he is playing tells us that he comes from the Ukraine, or Carpatho-Rusyn. The instrument is a trembita --more precisely, a vivcars'ka trembita. This horn measures approximately three meters in length and is used by shepherds to signal their locations in the mountains or to call their sheep in at dusk.
	A large retrospective of Hildegard Schieb's art took place in 1999 in Hattingen. Today examples of her fine art are included in public collections in that city as well as throughout Germany, Austria, Romania and elsewhere.

Condition:	Printed upon fine, handmade mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published by the artist around 1950. Signed, titled and annotated, 'Handdrucke' (hand printed), by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. A finely printed gray and black impression and in very good condition throughout.
