Luigi Schiavonetti's original aquatint engraving and etching, "Virgin and Dead Christ, In His Majesty's Collection", is based upon a drawing by the Italian artist, Annibale Carracci housed in England's Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. It is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as created by Schiavonetti in 1807 for John Chamberlaine's set of original engravings published under the title, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", bearing the text; "An. Carracci del.t.", "L. Schiavonetti fec.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Pub.d as the Act directs April. 15. 1807. by I. Chamberlaine. Scotland Yard." in the lower margin. An original engraving created in sepia, this scene depicts the Virgin Mary praying over the body of Christ. It is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the Italian / British artist, Luigi Schiavonetti and the designs of Annibale Carracci. In explanation for these original engravings Chamberlaine wrote, "The principal object, indeed, intended by the publishing of these engravings is to facilitate to the Artist the means of study and improvement. The works of the great Masters swell the collections of the curious, but are of little general use. Access is rarely permitted: and when permitted, affords but few and partial advantages to the student. He is indulged only with a short and transient view of excellencies, which require to be examined with the nicest care, and to be studied with the deepest attention. He, therefore, who multiplies engravings from the works of the great Masters, renders no mean service to the art."* John Chamberlaine |

Note: | Luigi Schiavonetti: Next to Francesco Bartolozzi, Luigi Schiavonetti arguably is England's most famous stipple engraver. Like Bartolozzi, Schiavonetti was born and trained in Italy. At the age of thirteen he commenced a three year apprenticeship under Giulio Golini. After this time he turned his talents to engraving and imitated several of Bartolozzi's engravings with great success in his native Bassano. These prints came to the attention of Francesco Bartolozzi himself, and when Luigi Schiavonetti came to London shortly thereafter, the master made him his principal assistant. |
During his career' Luigi Schiavonetti engraved the portraits of such notables as the Duke of York, the Queen of Prussia and William Blake. He was regularly commissioned for such famous publications as Boydell's "Shakespeare" and "Milton" sets, Ottley's, "The Italian School of Design", Blair's, "The Grave" (designed by William Blake), Wheatley's "Cries of London" and John Chamberlaine's, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". "Virgin and Dead Christ", published in 1807, hails from the latter publication.
Luigi Schiavonetti's "Virgin and Dead Christ" was created in 1807 for John Chamberlaine's, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection".
Annibale Carracci: The Bolognese brothers, Annibale Carracci (Bologne, 1560 - Rome, 1609) and Agostino Carracci (Bologna, 1557 - Parme, 1602) and their cousin Ludovico Carracci (Bologna, 1555 - 1619), were prominent figures that stood in opposition to the prevailing Mannerism of late 16th century Italian painting. After studying art under his uncle in Parma, Annibale Carracci first worked in Venice and Bologna.
In the early 1580’s, the Carracci brothers founded the Accademia degli Incamminati (Academy of the Progressives) in Bologna. They laid special emphasis upon drawing from life and clear draughtsmanship which became associated with the artists of the Bolognese School.
Around 1600 Annibale Carracci was invited to Rome by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese to decorate the Farnese Palace. During the next four years some of his most famous frescoes were created there. Regarded as a master of both figure and landscape painting, Annibale Carracci directly influenced such artists as Domenichino, Claude Lorrain and Poussin.
Virgin and Dead Christ, In His Majesty's Collection: An original aquatint engraving and etching in sepia by Luigi Schiavonetti, "Virgin and Dead Christ" depicts the Virgin Mary praying over the body of Christ. It is based upon a drawing created by the Bolognese artist, Annibale Carracci housed in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. This impression is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as created by Luigi Schiavonetti in 1807 for John Chamberlaine's set of original engravings published under the title, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", bearing the text; "An. Carracci del.t.", "L. Schiavonetti fec.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Pub.d as the Act directs April. 15. 1807. by I. Chamberlaine. Scotland Yard." in the lower margin and is listed as the 30th plate, entitled, "Virgin and Dead Christ". This is surely a striking example of the engraved art created by Luigi Schiavonetti and the 16th century Italian art of Annibale Carracci.
In explanation for these original engravings Chamberlaine wrote, "The principal object, indeed, intended by the publishing of these engravings is to facilitate to the Artist the means of study and improvement. Access is rarely permitted: and when permitted, affords but few and partial advantages to the student. He, therefore, who multiplies engravings from the works of the great Masters, renders no mean service to the art."* John Chamberlaine.
John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty’s Collection, Chamberlaine’s greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein's portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, 'Historical Engraver to his Majesty'.
In 1796, Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point, John Chamberlaine amalgamated the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection.
