Italo Scanga's Pottery is an original monotype by the American sculptor, painter and printmaker in 1987. This original impression is printed, upon very thick hand-made, rag paper, signed and dated by the artist in pencil. Italo Scanga employed brilliant overlaying painted colors of yellow, red, brown, black and green to create this exceptional monotype. Most of Scanga's original monotypes were created between 1985 and 1995. Note: First used by Castiglione in the 17th Century, the Monotype or Monoprint lays a claim to both printmaking and painting. The method produces only a single impression by using pressure to transfer an image painted on one surface (usually glass) to another (usually paper). |

In 1956 he enrolled at Michigan State University and received his MA degree there in 1961. He then accepted his first teaching post at the University of Wisconsin. During his career Scanga also taught at such institutions as the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, Tyler School of Art, Pilchuck Glass School and at the University of California, San Diego. |
Italo Scanga began exhibiting his art in the early 1960's . In 1972 his work was the subject of a one-man exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Subsequent solo exhibitions were held at Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City (1985), Oakland Museum (1986), Amalfi Arte, Amalfi, Italy (1987) and Tacoma Art Museum (1993). Scanga first gained national recognition for his sculpture, particularly those constructed with everyday objects. Most of the artist's original monotypes (monoprints) were created between 1985 and 1995. Pottery, an original monotype created by Scanga in 1987, employs overlaying painted colors of yellow, red, brown, black and green. | |
