Note: |
Margaret Sargent also listed as 'Margarett Sargent': A fourth
cousin of John Singer Sargent, Margaret Sargent studied art in Boston
under Gutzon Borglum and Charles Woodbury. She was also mentored by George
Luks and quickly established herself in Boston's avant-garde circles.
Margaret Sargent's period of artistic activity was rather brief
(from around 1920 to 1935) but during this time her paintings and sculptures
were included in major exhibitions at the National Academy of Design, the
National Association of Women Artists, the Art Institute of Chicago, the
Corcoran Gallery and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. |
|
Margaret Sargent spent a considerable amount of time in
Paris where she studied and applied modern trends in art. In her paintings
and drawings, her work is often compared to that of Henri Matisse. This
is clearly seen in Seated Woman, where both the figure and the furnishings
are pared down to their essential lines. This compelling drawing is not
signed but as it is probably a preparatory study for a possible painting,
this is not surprising. |
|
Margarett W. McKean Sargent was a full member of the National
Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, New York City. Not long ago (1984)
her portrait art was included in an important exhibition at the Whitney
Museum of American Art, New York, entitled, "The Feminine Gaze: Women
Depicted by Women, 1900 - 1930". |
