Marcel Charles Laurent Salinas 'Marcel Salinas': Born
in Egypt, Marcel Charles Laurent Salinas was the son of a French mother
and an Italian father. Art was not his first vocation. Salinas studied law
in France and practised this profession for more than a decade. He received
his law degree from the University of Aix-en-Provence. While there, he meticulously
studied the works of that area's most famous artist, Paul Cezanne. As one can
see in such works of art as, Still Life with Pitcher & Pears, Cezanne's
methods proved to be a lifelong inspiration for Marcel Salinas. |
|
Around 1945 Marcel Salinas abandoned the bar and became
a full time artist in Paris. There he studied under the painter and art
theorist, Andre Lhote (1885-1962). Shortly thereafter he began exhibiting
his art at the Salon des Surindependants, and elsewhere in Paris. In
1955 Marcel Salinas was introduced to lithography and began working as
a lithographic printer. Within several years he was considered to be
one of the finest printers in Paris and many famous contemporary artists
sought his skill and advice. |
|
In 1969 Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) asked Salinas to create
several lithographs based upon his "Imaginary Portraits" paintings.
Picasso was not looking for 'copies' of his portraits but rather for
new interpretations of them. For the following three years the two artists
worked closely together, creating twenty-nine "Imaginary Portraits" in
lithography. |
|
Marcel Salinas moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1995. Two
years later a major retrospective of his paintings, drawings and prints
was held in that city at the 20th Century Masters Gallery. Previous one
man exhibitions had taken place in Paris, New York, Alexandria and Copenhagen.
Marcel Salinas also served as artist-in-residence at the Foundation Francois
Desnoyer, France, and at the Paule Mikkelsen Minde Karslov, Denmark. |
