Thomas Rowlandson's 'Hot Goose, Cabbage & Cucumbers' |
"Hot Goose, Cabbage & Cucumbers" was drawn and etched by Thomas Rowlandson in 1823. Thomas Rowlandson's title may seem somewhat perplexing to the modern eye but a contemporary would easily recognize its significance. All three elements relate directly to the Regency world of the tailor. 'Goose' referred to a tailor's smoothing iron. Hot gooses (not geese) are being prepared in the fire by the young assistant. 'Cabbage' is an old English slang term for the left over pieces of cloth from commissioned suits. These pieces were often patched together or cut up and made into articles of clothing for sale -- at very little cost to the tailor. Both the old tailor and his other assistant are at work on such remnants. Tailors, in fact, were sometimes called cabbages. Finally, 'Cucumber Time' was a term used for the slow season in the tailoring trade, when the weeks were so unprofitable that all the food that could be afforded was cucumbers. An often used maxim was, "Tailors are Vegetarians, because they live on 'cucumber' when without work, and on 'cabbage' when in full employ." * Hence Thomas Rowlandson has depicted a pretty young maid selling her cucumbers at the window. Her calm and comely appearance represents a direct contrast to the occupants of the tailor's establishment. "Hot Goose, Cabbage & Cucumbers" is an original hand coloured etching printed on early nineteenth century hand-made, laid paper as published in London by John Fairburn in 1823. It is a fine, original example of the famous etched art created by the British artists, Thomas Rowlandson, one of England's greatest satirical masters. |

Note: | Thomas Rowlandson: Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Thomas Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. |
After studying in both Paris and London, Thomas Rowlandson began his career as a portrait painter. By 1782, however, he devoted himself almost exclusively to his first love; caricature and satirical art. After receiving a large inheritance, Rowlandson quickly gambled it away. Losing his fortune at a thirty-six hour card game he is known to have exclaimed, "I've played the fool, but (holding up his pencils) here is my resource."
Working with such British publishers as Flores, John Fairburn and Thomas Tegg, Thomas Rowlandson designed many memorable satires. In the book arts he collaborated with the famous London publisher, Rudolph Ackermann, to produce some of the finest satirical volumes in the history of art. These included The Microcosm of London (1808), the Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque (1812) and The English Dance of Death, published in two volumes in 1815 and 1816.
Despite his great illustrated works, Rowlandson's large, single sheet etchings remain his most famous legacy. Some (such as this original example) were both designed and etched by him; others were only designed by him and he also etched some compositions designed by his fellow artists and friends, such as George Woodward and Henry Bunbury.
