Gilles Rousselet: Seventeenth century France was
fortunate to have a legion of very gifted engravers. One of them was Gilles
Rousselet. It is thought that he studied engraving techniques under the
fine Dutch artist, Cornelis Bloemaert. During his career, Gilles Rousselet gained
fame for his large engravings after both the Italian masters of the Renaissance
and after contemporary French painters. In this latter vein, he formed
a close working relationship with the painter, Le Brun. His old master
engravings include works of art after Guido, Raphael, Domenichino and
Titian. Rousselet became a full member of the prestigious Royal French
Academy in 1663. |

This beautiful, large engraving originates from a famous
series known as the 'Cabinet du Roi'. In the early 1670's, the King of
France (Louis X1V) commissioned the country's best engravers to etch and
engrave his collection of paintings -- which would later form the beginnings
of the Louvre Museum. Such distinguished artists as Picart, Masson, Baudet,
Chasteau, de Poilly and Rousselet all contributed original engravings.
When completed (around 1675) the sets were then bound into special volumes.
The largest engravings, such as this original example, were folded down
the centre to accommodate the size of the volumes. It is believed that
less than one hundred impressions were struck from each plate. These spectacular
engravings are thus very scarce and The Entombment of Christ clearly
represents one of the finest works of art from this set. The French text in the lower left of this engraving reads; " Jesus Christ descendu de la Croix est porte au Sepulebre par ses disciples (Jesus Christ descends from the cross and is carried by his Disciples to his tomb). And, to the lower right, the text in Latin reads; "Christus e Cruce Detractus a Discipulis in Sepulebrum IInfertur--" |

Titian (Pieve di Cadore, c. 1487 – Venice, 1576): The greatest master of the Venetian School, Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) studied and trained under Giovanni Bellini, in Venice. As early as 1507, Titian was receiving government commissions and working alongside such artists as Giorgione. In 1516 he succeeded Bellini as the Official Painter to the Doge of Venice. By 1530 Titian’s clientele included most of the rulers and nobility of all of Catholic Europe. He was particularly patronised by Emperor Charles V and his son, Philip II, during the following years. In the 1540’s Titian assumed the unofficial role of portraitist to the Farnese, the family of Pope Paul the Third. As well such powerful figures as the Dukes of Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino continually vied for his portraits and mythological and religious scenes. As a result Titian became perhaps the most politically powerful artist of the Italian Renaissance. Titian’s influence has proved to be vast. Such masters as Poussin, Velazquez and Rubens have revered his art. This original engraving entitled, "The Entombment of Christ" is based upon a design created by the Italian Master, Titian. |
|
Titian's painting, The Entombment of Christ, was
acquired by Louis X1V in 1662. Thus Gilles Rousselet's engraving probably was
the first attempt to engrave the painting once it passed into the King's
collection. G. C. Williamson * lists it as being among Rousselet's greatest
works of art. The clarity of line, tone and detail within this large work
is indicative of the best work of seventeenth century French engraving.
It has, in fact, even served a utilitarian function. Over the centuries
Titian's painting darkened considerably and when restorers recently cleaned
the painting they turned to Rousselet's famous engraving as a guide. (George
C. Williamson, Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, London,
Bell & Sons, 1930, Vol. 1V, p. 289). |
