Gilles Rousselet: Seventeenth century France was
fortunate to have a legion of very gifted engravers. One of them was Gilles
Rousselet. It is thought that he studied engraving techniques under the
fine Dutch artist, Cornelis Bloemaert. During his career, Rousselet gained
fame for his large engravings after both the Italian masters of the Renaissance
and after contemporary French painters. In this latter vein, he formed
a close working relationship with the painter, Le Brun. His old master
engravings include works of art after Guido, Raphael, Domenichino and
Titian. Gilles Rousselet became a full member of the prestigious Royal French
Academy in 1663. |

This beautiful, large engraving entitled, Saint Francis in Meditation is based upon a design created by the Italian Master, Guido Reni. It hails from a famous
series known as the 'Cabinet du Roi'. In the early 1670's, the King of
France (Louis X1V) commissioned the country's best engravers to etch and
engrave his collection of paintings -- which would later form the beginnings
of the Louvre Museum. Such distinguished artists as Picart, Masson, Baudet,
Chasteau, de Poilly and Gilles Rousselet all contributed original engravings.
When completed (around 1675) the sets were then bound into special volumes.
The largest engravings, such as this original example, were folded down
the centre to accommodate the size of the volumes. It is believed that
less than one hundred impressions were struck from each plate. These spectacular
engravings are thus very scarce and Saint Francis in Meditation
clearly represents a wonderful works of art from this set. Engravings by Gilles Rousselet created after designs and paintings by Guido Reni include, "Hercule Taunt L'Hydre", "Elevement de Dejanire par le Centaure Nesse", "S. Maria Magdalena", Combat d'Hercule et d'Achelous", as well as other important 17th century works. |
