Charles Rossiter's original etching, St. Valentine's Day was commissioned for the important 1862 publication, Passages from Modern English Poets Illustrated by the Junior Etching Club. In this etching, Rossiter depicts a lady awaiting her guest on the landing. Balding and sporting a pair of thick glasses a middle aged man ascends the steps with great deliberation. In his right hand he clutches a Valentine’s day card. Like all the etchings from Passages it was accompanied by at least one poem. In this case it was Valentine’s Day, by Winthrop Mackworth Praed (1802-1839). The opening stanza is given below: Apollo has peeped through the shutter, This original etching is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. It is signed with the artist’s ‘CR’ monogramme within the image to the lower left. It also bears the artist's name name "C. Rossiter" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate. St. Valentine' Day is a fine, original example of the nineteenth century genre art created by the British artist, Charles Rossiter. |

Note: | Charles Rossiter: A nineteenth century London painter and etcher of mostly genre scenes, Charles Rossiter was not born into privileged circumstances and thus initially served an apprenticeship with a picture cleaner and restorer. He did, however, manage to attend some classes at the Royal Academy Schools and began exhibiting his paintings in London around 1855. Charles Rossiter was a frequent exhibitor at the annual Royal Academy exhibitions from 1859 to 1890. |
Charles Rossiter was also a teacher of art techniques. One of his students was the painter, Francis Fripp Seares, whom he married in 1860. Today the art of Charles Rossiter is included in such collections as The Birmingham Art Gallery, the Athenaeum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. | |
Charles Rossiter was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, Matthew James Lawless, Walter Severn, Henry Stacy Marks, Frederick Smallfield, Arthur James Lewis, Frederick Bacon Barwell, William Gale, Joseph Clark, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and the above artists all contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862. Charles Rossiter contributed three original etchings to Passages; A Young Monkey, The Bird Trap and St. Valentine’s Day. | |

Winthrop Mackworth Praed: An English politician and author, Winthrop Mackworth Praed (London, 1802 - 1839), studied at Eton College, where he founded the manuscript journal, Apis matina (1820), and later the short lived periodical The Etonian (1820-1821). Then in 1821, he continued his studies and career at Trinity College, Cambridge and during that period, Praed received such outstanding awards for his academic and artistic achievements as the Sir William Browne medal for the Greek Ode (1822 & 1823), and for the Epigrams' (1823 & 1824), the Chancellor's Gold Medal for English verse, (1823 & 1824) for Australasia, a poem, Athens, a poem; Epigrammata, and Carmen Craecum, were also prize poems. Winthrop Mackworth Praed also won a fellowship at Trinity College (1827) and the Scatonian prizes (1830). Praed also contributed prose, verses, poetry and other literary material to the Knight's Quarterly Magazine (1822), Brazen Head weekly paper (1826), the New Monthly, and the Morning Post (1836 - ?). Other works included School and Schoolfellows, A homage to Eton, Good Night to the Season (1827), Fairy Song, The Newly-Wedded, The Vicar (1829), Valentine’s Day, a poem by Winthrop Mackworth Praed was chosen to illustrate this original etching created by the British artist, Charles Rossiter. After obtaining his degree as a barrister, Winthrop Mackworth Praed decided to enter into politics, and was also well esteemed in this field. He held a seat as a member of the Conservative party in the House of Commons and various other political offices. It is noted that he would have become a great statesman had it not been for his death at the young age of thirty seven.. | |

The firm began in the mid 1820's under the title of 'Day & Hague' and assumed its more familiar name 'Day & Son, London' in 1845. Charles Rossiter's original etching, St. Valentine's Day was published by 'Day & Son, London' between 1861-62. Throughout their early years they printed and published works of art dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as, hunting scenes, genre depictions, landscape scenes and topographical views. | |

The etching is signed with the artist’s ‘CR’ monogramme within the image to the lower left. It also bears the artist's name name "C. It also bears the plate's number "37" to the upper right corner of the margin above the image. This impression is in excellent condition throughout without a trace of staining, foxing or fading. The Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), was an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Members included such prominent British artists as, Sir John Everett Millais, James McNeill Whistler, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Sir John Tenniel, Charles Samuel Keene, Joseph Clark, John Wright Oakes, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite, Matthew James Lawless, Arthur James Lewis, Henry Stacy Marks, Charles Rossiter, Vincent Bury, Lord G. Fitzgerald, J. R. Clayton, John Sleigh, and Lord Gerald Fitzgerald. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, first published by Day & Son Limited, Lithographers & Publishers, London, 1862. In total, that publication contained forty-seven original etchings. The Junior Club also issued, another important publication in 1858, Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood published by E.
