Louis Rosenberg: An original etching and drypoint by the American artist, Louis Conrad Rosenberg, Porticus of Octavia, Rome served as the annual presentation plate for the Brooklyn Society of Etchers in 1928. This famous portico was constructed by Augustus in the Circus Flaminius around 27 B.C. It was named after Augustus's sister. Of Rosenberg's architectural art Kenneth Reid writes, "In contemplating a group of Rosenberg's prints one is struck not only by the perfection of his technique, whether in etching or drypoint, but by their completeness as pleasingly designed pictures. In each of them, whatever the pattern, there is a serene quality of balance which satisfies the eye and which could only have resulted from careful preliminary study." * The Mead Art Museum at Amherst College includes an impression of Porticus of Octavia, Rome in its permanent collection. |
