Felicien Rops

Felicien Rops - Le Flirt A mon vieux Jean de Tinan

Le Flirt: A mon vieux Jean de Tinan ('The Flirt: To my Old Friend, Jean de Tinan')

Felicien Rops's "Le Flirt: A mon vieux Jean de Tinan" originates from an original aquatint and etching Felicien Rops created for Jean de Tinan's 1894 book entitled, "Un Document sur L'impuissance D'Aimer" ('A Document on the Inability to Love'). This larger etching contained a central panel of a nude with a cupid as well as five vignette etchings along the borders and at the bottom of the plate. "Le Flirt" occupied the lower third of the plate. the English translation is ('The Flirt: To my Old Friend, Jean de Tinan').

After the etching appeared in Jean de Tinan's publication, Felicien Rops separated "Le Flirt" from the rest of the plate and altered it by etching "J de T", to the upper left, and the words, "A mon Vieux Jean de Tinan, son jeune ami, Felicien Rops", to the lower right. Jean de Tinan (1874-1898) was the author of such works as "Un Document sur L'impuissance D'Aimer" (1894), "Penses-tu reussir" (1897), and "L'Exemple de Ninon de Leclos amoureuse" (1898). Despite his very short life, Jean de Tinan formed close friendships with a number of artists of the Belle Epoque. Besides requesting art from Felicien Rops, Toulouse-Lautrec also contributed a lithograph to one of de Jean de Tinan's works.

This original etching is printed upon 19th century wove paper and with large margins as published in 1894. This original impression of "Le Flirt: A mon vieux Jean de Tinan" is signed by Felicien Rops in the plate to the lower right margin and included with this etching is the original presentation sheet.

Title: Le Flirt: A mon vieux Jean de Tinan ('The Flirt: To my Old Friend, Jean de Tinan')
Artist: Rops, Felicien Joseph Victor 'Felicien Rops' (Namur, Belgium, 1833 - Essonnes, France, 1898)
Date: 1894
Medium: Original Soft Ground Etching
Note: Felicien Joseph Victor Rops 'Felicien Rops': "I cherish my obscurity. I don't exhibit in order not to expose myself to receiving an honourable mention. ... I grant no one the right to honour me, such recognition seeming to me to be the depths of humility. I don't know if I will produce something which pleases me; as for pleasing others, I give no more of a damn for that than for my last year's gloves." *
For an artist who 'cherished his obscurity', Felicien Rops' etchings during his lifetime had an impressive list of admirers. These included Charles Baudelaire, the Goncourt Brothers, Huysmans, Peladan, Jean de Tinan, Emile Verhagren and Octave Mirabeau, many of whom requested Rops to illustrate their writings. Obscurity was further denied by the controversial nature of Felicien Rops' etched art. Eroticism was the major element and it was often inter woven with either Satanism or Christian mysticism and symbolism.
Born in Belgium, Felicien Rops first studied art at the Free University at Brussels and at the Atelier Saint-Luc. From 1854 to 1857, he worked with both Constantin Meunier and Charles de Groux. His first experiments with etching date from 1857 and, in 1862, Felicien Rops went to Paris to study etching techniques under both Bracquemond and Jacquemart. At this time he began accepting commissions from Paris publishers to illustrate the writings of various authors and playwrights. Many of the most famous etchings of Felicien Rops were created for the literary medium. As a literary illustrator, J. K. Huysmans called Rops "the unique master of the frontispiece" **.
Dividing his time between France and Belgium, Felicien Rops founded the International Society of Etchers in Belgium in 1875 and was a regular exhibitor with the influential Belgian avant-garde artists, Les XX. Today he is viewed as perhaps the most influential erotic artist of his time.
