Gaston Rodriguez: A French etcher and wood
engraver, Gaston Rodriguez was born in Paris and studied printmaking techniques
there under Courtry. During the 1880's and 1890's he was a frequent exhibitor
at the Salon des Artistes Francais. Gaston Rodriguez's art received an honorable mention
from that institution in 1889 and a medal in 1890. |
|
Jean Francois Millet: During the late nineteenth
century no single artist's influence was as far reaching as that of Jean Francois Millet
(1814-1875). His art was a primary influence upon such artists
as Camille Pissarro, Georges Seurat and Vincent van Gogh. In these
years publisher's frequently commissioned artists to create etchings and
lithographs based upon the paintings and drawings of Millet. Gaston Rodriguez
etched several large plates based upon Jean Francois Millet's designs. |

The Large Victorian Era Etching and Engraving:
Perhaps the most technically demanding form of original printmaking, the
Victorian era engraving reached its summit during the late nineteenth century.
Highly skilled engravers would often devote more than a full year's work
to one large engraving, using such complex methods as etching, engraving,
stippling, aquatinting and mezzotinting to produce remarkable tones and
hues. During this time these large engravings became the driving force of
the Victorian art world. |
|
Unfortunately, surviving examples of this unique art form
are now very scarce. Because of their large size most of these engravings
were framed and nineteenth century framers knew next to nothing about archival
conservation. Thus the majority of these engravings have been unalterably
ruined. Thankfully, this important example is in near excellent condition. |

It should also be noted that this particular impression of
Scene At the Back Door is an artist's proof before letters. During
the Victorian era only the first nine or ten impressions would be printed
before the title letters were added to the bottom margin. A separate miniature
etching called a remarque (in this case a representation of Millet's famous
self-portrait) would be created by the artist for these initial proof impressions.
Often these valuable, early impressions would be printed on either India
paper or upon expensive vellum. Vellum creates a warmth and luminosity that
paper cannot match. It is also exceptionally durable and this explains why
this important proof etching has survived in such fine condition. As well,
this particular impression is hand signed by Gaston Rodriguez. |
