M. Paul Roche: A highly respected American painter,
sculptor and etcher, M. Paul Roche came to the United States as a young
boy. His studies took him first to the Pratt Institute Art School and
later to the prestigious National Academy of Design, where he worked under
Charles Hawthorne. During his career, Roche was equally well known for
both his etchings and drypoints and for his large mural paintings. Most
of his architectural art dealt with his home city of Baltimore. |
|
M. Paul Roche was a full member of the Brooklyn Society
of Etchers, the Salamina Club, New York, and the American Federation of
Arts. Examples of his art are found in the collections of the Chicago
Institute of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Detroit Art Institute,
the New York Public Library, the California State Library and the Library
of Congress, Washington DC. |
|
Roche's original etchings and drypoints were published in
Baltimore by F. H. Robertson & Co. All were printed in editions of either
100 or 50 impressions. S. W. Straus and Company is a superior example
of his etched art. Observed from ground level, both the buildings and
the street life are delineated with the skill of a truly great architectural
artist. |
