Albert Robida - Les Graveurs Du XIX Siecle par H. Beraldi Engravers of the 19th Century

Les Graveurs Du XIX Siecle par H. Beraldi (Engravers of the 19th Century)

Albert Robida's original etching, "Les Graveurs Du XIX Siecle par H. Beraldi" (Engravers of the 19th Century) is printed upon nineteenth century hand-made paper and with full margins as published in Paris by Henri Beraldi and printed by Chardon & Sormam in 1891. This impression is signed by the artist within the plate, lower right. It also bears the title, "Les Graveurs Du XIX Siecle par H. Beraldi. Paris, L. Conquet" in the central banner, the artist's name, "A. Robida sc." in the lower left, and the printer's details "Imp. Chardon & Sormam" in the lower right. The etching depicts a full portrait of a woman in full fashionable regalia. For the setting, Robida selects the seaside, as we can see in the background where some sailors are greatly admiring the legs of a bather. "Les Graveurs Du XIX Siecle par H. Beraldi" is a fine example of the etched art by the French artist, Albert Robida.

Note: Albert Robida: A fine French painter, etcher, lithographer and writer, Albert Robida became famous both for his whimsical scenes of Paris life and for his highly regarded satirical art. Robida began his artistic career in 1866 when he began contributing his designs to French periodicals. This aspect of his art continued through his life and he established himself as one of the more popular artists of "La Vie Parisienne", "Le Rire" and "Fantasio". During the First World War, Albert Robida's suites of lithographs and commentaries, such as Villes Martyres proved to be of prime influence within the arts community.
As a literary figure Albert Robida was perhaps even more famous. In 1880 he co-founded the popular periodical, "La Caricature", and served as the chief editor for twelve years. During this period Robida was also active as a novelist. His best known literary works were in the then fledgling field of science fiction and he proved to be remarkably adept at predicting the life and culture of the future. Such works as "Le Vingtieme Siecle" (1883), "La Guerre au Vingtieme Siecle" (1887) and "La Vie Electrique" (1890) featured many twentieth century technological innovations such as the 'telephonoscope', which contained elements of both television and the internet. As well, twentieth century warfare introduced poison gas and guided missiles. Women gained social equality, pollution constantly clouded the skies, and tourism became a common occurrence. During this period Albert Robida was almost as widely read as the most heralded French author of science fiction, Jules Verne (1828-1905).
Les Graveurs Du XIX Siecle par H. Beraldi (Engravers of the 19th Century) shows yet another side of Albert Robida's art, his talent as an original etcher. The image is dominated by a beauty in full fashionable regalia. For the setting, he selects the seaside, as we can see in the background where some sailors are greatly admiring the legs of a bather. Contrasting heavily and lightly etched areas, the entire scene is beautifully handled by this great artist.
Henri Beraldi and "Les Gravures du XIX Siecle": From 1885 to 1892 the influential French writer, Henri Beraldi issued a twelve volume series of biographical catalogues under the title of "Les Gravures du XIX Siecle". With the emphasis placed upon living French etchers and lithographers, Beraldi requested a number of contemporary masters to contribute original graphic works for the catalogues dedicated to them. The response was an incredible success with such major artists as Felix Buhot, Henri Guerard, Boutet, Henri de Grandmaison, Jules Cheret, Felix Bracquemond and Auguste Lepere contributing brilliant works of a scale and size to fit within the pages of these volumes.
A valuable and scarce reference source, the volumes from these catalogues and particularly the original prints are very difficult to obtain. Henri Beraldi is to be thanked for commissioning these great works, which represent some of the finest graphic art from one of the most exciting eras of the art of France.
