Note: |
This beautiful architectural engraving entitled, Waltham On The Wolds, Leicestershire
originates from a group of forty works of art which were published in London in 1828 under
the title of, A Series of Ancient Baptismal Fonts. Examining the individual
characteristics and artistry of each font, the series covered examples
from the early Norman era (late eleventh century) to the mid fifteenth
century. Within this chronological framework, the engravings were divided
into four general categories' Norman Fonts, Early English Fonts, Decorated
English Fonts and Perpendicular English Fonts. An interesting note is
that the author complained that many of these magnificent stone carvings
had been severely painted over with whitewash and required extensive restoration
on his part before they could be drawn and engraved. |
|
Each plate was engraved by Robert Roberts and drawn by Francis
Simpson, who also supplied the textual information and research. Francis
Simpson was a well established antiquarian artist and archivist. Like
many English scholars of his day Francis Simpson was keenly engaged in attempts to
preserve ancient relics and architecture. He was also the long time Mayor
of the city of Stamford. The Font depicted here hails from the early English series,
with intersecting arches and use of the square abucus mark very strongly the Norman
style; while the toothed ornament and character of the foliage are clearly
Early English in style. The bowl and shaft are an octagonal shape. The author
states this Font was situated at the west end of the south aisle. The height,
exclusive of the stem measures three feet. The auther also stated that the church had
some elaborate stalls of and some decorated and perpendicular windows, and the capitals
and bases of the piers of the two aisles were very good specimens of Early English Work similar to the date of the Font.
