Note: | George Wistar Hodge Ritchie 'George W. H. Ritchie': A nineteenth century New York City etcher and printer, George Wistar Hodge Ritchie is best known for the many plates he printed. He first established his printing press at 109 Liberty Street, New York. Among the artists who entrusted their etched plates to Ritchie were such notables as Winslow Homer who had him print first edition impressions of "The Life Line", "Eight Bells", "Mending the Tears", "Perils of the Sea" and "Fly Fishing". |
Frank Weitenkampf * states that G. W. H. Ritchie was a leading light of the 'Scratchers' Club'. He writes, "The Scratchers' Club, of Brooklyn, born in 1882, under the auspices of G. W. H. Ritchie, Walter M Aikman, Carleton Wiggins, Benjamin Lander, Stanley Middleton, lived for a few years. 'Sometimes,' says Mr. Aikman, 'one of the members would have a plate to bite, and our friend George W. H. Ritchie pulled the proofs. We never had an exhibition for the simple reason that we never made enough plates to hold one.'"
In 1883 the Art Department of the New England Manufacturers’ and Mechanics’ Institute, Boston, held a major exhibition of contemporary American art. Concentrating mostly upon American drawings and etchings the exhibition catalogue listed 731 works of original art. George Wistar Hodge Ritchie’s original etching, From Under the Trees, was included in this exhibition and bears the catalogue number, 568. **
George W. H. Ritchie was particularly active for the above named exhibition. Including From Under the Trees, he contributed three original etchings. As well, he was commissioned to print many of the exhibition's etchings, including works by Thomas Moran, Stephen Parrish, Henry Farrer, Benjamin Lander, Joseph Lauber, James Craig Nicoll and Henry W. Rice.
