The Century Christmas Number

Louis Rhead created this original lithographic advertising poster entitled, The Century Christmas Number for the 'Century Magazine' in 1894. It is one of his most beautiful designs and represents superb, original example of the art Nouveau poster created by this important American artist, Louis John Rhead. The letterpress reads,

"The Century, Containing Christmas Stories, Poems and Pictures; 25 full page illustrations, Rudyard Kipling's first American story, the opening of Mrs. Burton Harrison's novel, etc., and interesting chapters in the life of Napoleon 'Christmas Number'".

This original Louis Rhead lithograph was formerly in the collection of Ned A. Flood, one of the greatest Art Nouveau Americana collectors and bears his catalogue # 84.

Note: Louis John Rhead 'Louis Rhead': From a family of well-known English artists, Louis Rhead was sent to Paris at the age of thirteen to study under Boulanger. Returning to England several years later, he continued his studies under Edward Pointer and Alphonse Legros. He settled in the United States in the late 1880's.
  At about this time, Louis Rhead visited Paris; he became good friends with Eugene Grasset, the famous French art Nouveau master, and was deeply influenced by him. Along with Will Bradley and Edward Penfield, Louis Rhead was in the forefront of the American Art Nouveau movement. During the best Art Nouveau years, 1894 to 1896, Louis Rhead created lithographic posters for both Century and for Scribner's. The Century Magazine produced some of the greatest Art Nouveau posters during this period. He also had one-man exhibitions of his work in France, England and the United States.
  Louis Rhead was a master of design and his talents were perfectly suited for the Art Nouveau poster. His striking work was often based on daring colour schemes, flat tints and few lines, which he managed to combine with surprising harmony. Louis Rhead's posters, like all the work of the best Art Nouveau artists, command great attention to this day.

Provenance: This original lithographic poster entitled "The Century Christmas Number" was formerly in the collection of Ned A. Flood and bearing his catalogue # 84. Ned Arden Flood is listed as one of the greatest Art Nouveau Americana collectors (See Margolin, p. 20). At one time, his extensive collection housed over one thousand examples of American posters from the 1890's.
