Note: | Samuel William Reynolds: One of the best painters and mezzotint engravers of the early nineteenth century, S. W. Reynolds studied art in London under C. H. Hodges and John Raphael Smith. Samuel Reynolds's first engraved portrait (a study of George III when still Prince of Wales) bears the date of 1794. He began exhibiting his art at the Royal Academy in 1797 and continued to show his work there until 1827. Reynolds's mezzotints were also greatly admired by the French and were exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1810. Altogether, he mezzotinted nearly three hundred and fifty portraits. |

Note: | John Clerk (Penicuik, 1728 - Eldin, 1812) was a Scottish artist, author and Parliamentarian. He first became a merchant in Edinburgh before accepting various positions in the Government. His most famous literary work was, Naval Tactics, which appears to have given rise to much controversy. Throughout his career, john Clerk evinced a strong inclination for drawing, and most particularly, etching from nature. In the eighteenth century, few British artists devoted much effort to etching. Thus Clerk's landscape etchings are often seen as important precursors to the etching revival of the mid nineteenth century. |
