Note: | Jean Babtist Eugene Reverdy 'Eugene Reverdy': A fine French painter of portraits, landscapes and figure studies, Eugene Reverdy studied art in his native Paris. He exhibited his first works of art there around 1830 and during the following twenty years his reputation grew steadily. In the 1840's Reverdy was established as a leading portrait and figure painter and his art was included in the regular Paris Salon exhibitions of 1844, 1847 and 1848. |
The Sleeping Horseman is a great example of Eugene Reverdy's art from this period. This was a revolutionary era in French art as many superb artists were exploring more realistic imagery as opposed to classical traditions. For example, Gericault (1791-1824) produced a series of striking lithographs depicting working horses. Other artists such as Reverdy continued to explore these more intimate, rather than grand or heroic moments. In this original drawing the traveler is fatigued by his journey and is fast asleep. Even the constant nudging from his horse does little to arouse him from his deep slumber.
The Sleeping Horseman in all probability formed part of a series of drawings Eugene Reverdy was working upon at this time. On the upper right margin of the paper the artist has written in pencil, "3me Cheval", indicating that the drawings dealt with various types of horses and their roles.
